Å·ÃÀÊÓƵ and Clay County Public Health are hosting a workshop, Trauma-Informed Care: Fostering Healing Through Best Practices Training, on Wednesday, May 21. The event will be from 8:30-11:30 a.m. in Concordia's Knutson Campus Center, Jones A/B, on the second floor. It’s free and open to the public and includes a complimentary breakfast.

Trauma-informed care aims to create safe and supportive environments where individuals, particularly those who have experienced trauma, can feel secure, trust those around them, and have a sense of control over their care.

Trainer Heather Simonich has more than 20 years of experience in mental health research, therapy, and advocacy. She is a 2012 Bush Leadership Fellow, published author, TEDx speaker, and a Licensed Professional Counselor. She currently serves as an assistant dean of students and director of the Center for Holistic Health at Å·ÃÀÊÓƵ.

Participants will:

• Understand and describe the core principles of trauma-informed care. 
• Describe the basic neurobiology of trauma and how it relates to best practices. 
• Learn fundamental best practices for working with individuals who have a history of childhood trauma.

The training is open to the public and professionals in social work, education, nursing, public health, healthcare, first responders, and substance use treatment. Continuing education credits are available for some licenses.
